How to Select the Right Non Woven Interlining Fabric for Your Project?

Selecting the Right Non-Woven Interlining: A Practical Guide

1. Match the Fabric Weight
Lightweight Fabrics (chiffon, silk): Use soft, thin interlining (20-30gsm) to avoid stiffness.
Medium Fabrics (cotton, linen): Choose mid-weight interlining (40-60gsm) for subtle structure.
Heavy Fabrics (denim, wool): Opt for firm interlining (70-100gsm) to support seams and edges.

2. Consider the Garment's Function
Collars/Cuffs: Crisp, fusible interlining (hard finish) holds sharp creases.
Curtains/Drapes: Drapable interlining (soft, drape-friendly) maintains fluid movement.
Bags/Caps: Ultra-stiff interlining (board-like) for rigid shapes.

3. Choose Bonding Method Wisely
Fusible Interlining:
Best for: Quick projects, curved seams (e.g., collars).
Avoid: Delicate fabrics (velvet, sequins) or high-heat fabrics.
Sew-In Interlining:
Best for: Heavy coats, leather, or fabrics that can't handle iron heat.
Use: When durability for dry cleaning is essential.

4. Test Compatibility First
Heat Test: Iron a scrap piece with your fabric—check for glue bleed, bubbling, or discoloration.
Drape Test: Hold fused fabric vertically—ensure it doesn't stiffen unnaturally.

5. Prioritize Care Requirements
Machine-Washable Projects: Use wash-stable interlining (labeled "industrial laundering grade").
Dry-Clean Only Garments: Standard fusible or sew-in works (glue won't dissolve in solvents).
Avoid cheap interlining for frequently washed items—peeling occurs after 5-10 washes.

6. Special Cases
Stretch Fabrics (knits, jersey): Use stretch interlining (flexible glue) to avoid restricting movement.
White/Sheer Fabrics: Choose white or transparent interlining—dark backing shows through.
High-Friction Areas (waistbands, plackets): Select reinforced interlining with extra abrasion resistance.

7. Cost vs. Quality Trade-Off
Budget Projects: Basic PP/PET interlining (suitable for crafts or short-term use).
Premium Garments: Invest in multi-layered interlining (e.g., woven + non-woven blend) for resilience.
