How to Use Non-Woven Interlining
1. Pre-Use Preparation
Check Compatibility
Test a scrap piece with your fabric to ensure the interlining doesn’t stiffen too much or bleed glue.
Avoid using fusible interlining on heat-sensitive fabrics (e.g., sequins, vinyl).
Pre-Shrink if Needed
Some interlinings shrink when heated—pre-wash or steam before cutting to prevent warping.
2. Cutting the Interlining
Follow Pattern Pieces
Cut interlining to match the exact size/shape of the fabric piece it will support (e.g., collar, cuff, waistband).
No seam allowance needed (unless specified for sew-in types).
Grain Direction (If Applicable)
Non-woven interlining has no grain, so it can be cut in any direction.
3. Applying Fusible Interlining
Positioning
Place the glue side (rough/textured) against the wrong side of the fabric.
Use pins or clips to hold in place—avoid shifting while ironing.
Fusing with Heat
Use a dry iron (no steam) at the recommended temperature (usually medium heat).
Press for 8-10 seconds in sections, lifting and reapplying—do not slide the iron.
Let cool before handling to ensure a strong bond.
4. Sew-In Interlining Application
Basting First
Hand-stitch or machine-baste the interlining to the fabric before final sewing.
Stitching Techniques
Sew along edges or within seams to secure (e.g., sandwich between fabric layers).
Trim excess interlining after stitching to reduce bulk.
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Overheating → Glue melts through fabric, leaving stains.
Uneven Pressing → Causes bubbling or peeling.
Wrong Weight → Too stiff for lightweight fabrics, too flimsy for heavy materials.
6. Aftercare Tips
Hand Wash or Gentle Cycle → Prolongs fusible bond life.
Avoid High Heat in Dryers → Can reactivate glue and cause shifting.
Store Flat → Prevents creases from weakening the bond.
7. When to Choose Non-Woven vs. Woven Interlining
Use Non-Woven → For lightweight structure, quick projects, or curved seams (no grain restrictions).
Use Woven → For heavy tailoring (e.g., suit jackets) where drape and durability are critical.
